What Are Implant Dentures?
Implant dentures are different from traditional ones in that they attach to small titanium posts that are surgically placed into your jawbone, as opposed to relying on suction or adhesive to stick to your gums. They’re considered a sturdier solution and can be designed to be fixed in place long-term, or removable for convenience. During your consultation, our team will inspect your situation, review your medical history, and discuss your smile goals with you to determine if implant dentures are a viable solution for you. Here’s a closer look at the two types we might recommend.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
Fixed dentures are permanently attached to your dental implants and are only removed when visiting your dentist. Maintenance is as simple as regularly brushing and flossing them like you would your natural teeth.
Removable Implant Dentures
Removable implant dentures are designed to be taken out of your mouth so that you can clean underneath it. This type is often recommended for patients with reduced jawbone density because it requires fewer dental implants to be installed.
The Implant Denture Process
The typical process of being fitted with implant dentures includes the following steps:
- Consultation. Dr. Cordini and his dedicated team will take the necessary digital images and X-rays of your mouth and learn your dental concerns and goals. Based on your circumstances and their findings, they can recommend either fixed or removable implant dentures.
- Preparation (if needed). If your jawbone lacks the required density to support dental implants, you may need a bone graft to bulk it up, first. Other patients need a sinus lift before implant placement.
- Implant Placement. Dr. Cordini has the instruments and expertise to surgically place your dental implants onsite.
- Healing & Abutment Attachments. Your jawbone will fuse with the titanium rods in a process called osseointegration which can take about 3 to 6 months. Once they’ve recovered, Dr. Cordini and his team can connect small metal connectors called abutments to them.
- Inserting Your Dentures. Once your dentures have been created, you’ll be scheduled for an appointment to try them on and verify that everything is fitting correctly. Then they’ll be secured into place and your smile will look as good as new!
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
Our dentist in Louisville, KY can confirm that you’re a viable candidate for implant dentures if:
- You have no existing oral health issues.
- Your jawbone has the necessary support.
- You maintain excellent oral hygiene practices.
If you don’t meet these criteria currently, Dr. Cordini can work with you to resolve any pre-existing problems before proceeding with implant dentures.
