January 2, 2022
You’re admiring your smile in the bathroom mirror and you notice that something seems a little off. Upon closer inspection, you realize that your smile seems a little gummy, and your pearly whites are partially hidden by your gums. You begin to wonder what could’ve caused this and what you can do about it; fortunately, gum overgrowth is easily identifiable and well-understood and there are many treatment options available. Keep reading to learn more from your periodontist about what causes gum overgrowth and what you can do about it.
What Is Gum Overgrowth & What Causes It?
Also called gingival hyperplasia, gum overgrowth is a condition that occurs when the soft tissues surrounding your teeth covers too much of their upper structure. It can stem from a variety of causes, but a few of the common ones include:
- Gum disease – Gum disease is often caused by poor oral hygiene habits, and it can wreck all kinds of havoc inside your mouth if left untreated. It can irritate and inflame your gums and also cause gum overgrowth as it progresses.
- Genetics – Sometimes people are simply born with a genetic predisposition to gummier smiles.
- Systematic health conditions – Sometimes conditions like leukemia, HIV, diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, or even pregnancy can result in gum overgrowth.
- Certain medications – Medications used to manage heart conditions, prevent seizures, or lower your immune system activity can also cause excess gum tissue.
How Can I Treat Gum Overgrowth?
Gum overgrowth doesn’t just affect the appearance of your smile; it can also be potentially harmful to your teeth, gums, and jawbone! If the cause is gum disease that is left untreated, the infection can even enter your bloodstream and spread to other parts of your body, increasing your risk for conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and more. That said, seeking treatment is advisable! Luckily, there are many viable options including scaling and root planning, laser excision, and various types or surgery such as a gingivectomy (trimming a portion of your gums from around your teeth).
In addition to seeking treatment, practicing proper oral hygiene is another great way to ensure that gum overgrowth doesn’t pose a threat to your overall wellness. Brush twice every day for two minutes each time, and don’t forget to floss and rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash. Even managing stress can play a role in taking care of your gums!
If your concerned about your gummy smile, don’t hesitate to visit your dentist and seek treatment. Not only can it restore the look of your smile; it can help to guarantee that serious oral health concerns don’t have the chance to pop up.
